The Club's largest annual fundraiser is being held this week, ably organised by the Wagga cohort! All members and friends are encouraged to attend if you can make it to Wagga.

What if Paul Harris had started Rotary in 2026?

Many club members will know Evan Burrell. He is District Governor in District 9660 (Northern & Western NSW) and an active speaker in Rotary circles. Evan posed this question on his blog this week and I invited him to join us to speak to this idea, and others, at our meeting on Feb 26.

Meeting Recap: Feb 12

The club discussed upcoming events and speakers for the year, with inviting members to share what they were looking forward to in both Rotary and personal contexts. The conversation ended with plans to continue discussions about future activities and speakers.

The meeting began with members sharing personal plans and aspirations for the year, including travel, family reunions, and personal milestones. Travis discussed wider Rotary initiatives, including peacebuilding efforts, International Women's Day, and the upcoming Rotary International Convention in Taiwan. The club was reminded of Rotary's birthday on February 23rd and encouraged to participate in local activities. Travis also highlighted the opportunity to sponsor a participant for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (Ryla), which runs from June 21-26, with applications closing in May.

The group discussed funding for young leaders' programs, with Travis agreeing to follow up with clubs about covering costs and sharing information from the meeting. The conversation then shifted to a polio update, noting that Norm's video had been posted on the district website. Travis discussed the progress of global vaccination efforts, noting that only two countries still have wild polio, and highlighted Norm's video on the district website.

The meeting discussed the need for more interactive, structured, and engaging meetings due to declining club membership and attendance. Travis proposed creating breakout rooms for a 10-minute discussion on making meetings unmissable and testing a specific change at the next meeting, scheduled for the 26th, considering the club's major event on the 27th. The meeting focused on improving club engagement and discussing potential initiatives. Jenny suggested increasing communication among members, implementing icebreakers, and exploring ways to increase club income through bottle collections. Meg proposed inviting guest speakers for brief presentations, and Norm suggested having an international toast with a representative from an international club. Rotary discussed hosting an inbound youth exchange student, with Liz offering to host and coordinate tours. The board decided to offer a $24 discount on next year's membership fees for current members and discussed the possibility of hosting an inbound exchange student, seeking club support for coordination and hosting efforts.

The club discussed hosting inbound exchange students, with Lindell sharing past experiences and challenges, particularly regarding geographical logistics. Jenny and Ros expressed willingness to host students for weekend visits, and the group agreed to pursue hosting opportunities this year, with plans to formalize an expression of interest. They decided to invite Liz to a future meeting to explain the hosting process further, and Beth emphasized the need for Parkes to confirm co-hosting. The group also discussed the upcoming trivia night in Wagga, with Jenny having secured many sponsors.
