Carmel's Diary

by Youth Exchange Student Carmel Kelly, from France

Bonjour everyone!

I hope you enjoy reading this little update about my life in France in the past month!

After a few weeks of school, the holidays started! My first week was full of sleeping, and hanging out with my family and friends. I had a girls day with a heap of exchange students from my district. They come from Chile, Bolivia, Canada, Brazil, and Australia.
Me and 2 other Australians went to the 2 beautiful churches in Lille.

Meeting Recap: February 26

The meeting focused on a discussion with Evan Burrell, District Governor of Rotary District 9660, who shared his perspectives on the organisation's future and challenges. Evan explored innovative ideas for Rotary, including reimagining it for modern audiences and considering alternative structures like e-clubs or regionalised approaches. He emphasised the need for change and adaptation to remain relevant, while acknowledging resistance from within the organisation.

The group also discussed the impact of regionalisation, the challenges of middle management, and the importance of differentiation among clubs. Evan suggested consolidating efforts in some areas and highlighted successful examples of clubs operating independently.

Upcoming Speaker and Event Updates
Wendy DeLuca will miss the next two meetings due to a RAWCS trip to Nepal. Rob Uhl announced an upcoming speaker, Chief Inspector Gary Raymond, who will discuss the Anita Cobby murder case and the establishment of Grace's Place on March 12. Travis provided updates on upcoming events, including the trivia night, and introduced Evan Burrell to speak about his recent post.

Modernising Rotary for Future Generations
Evan, the District Governor of 9660, discussed his recent social media post imagining Paul Harris founding Rotary in 2026, which aimed to provoke discussion about modernising Rotary's approach. He suggested that a new Rotary would be more inclusive, purpose-driven, and focused on campaigns and projects rather than traditional meetings, utilising tools like WhatsApp, Facebook groups, and crowdfunding platforms. Evan expressed concerns about Rotarians' resistance to change and questioned the relevance of current Rotary club structures for younger generations, while highlighting the importance of friendship in Rotary activities.

Rotary's Adaptation and Growth Strategies
Evan discussed the potential for Rotary to adapt and remain relevant by embracing diverse initiatives, such as events featuring important issues such as sexual health, despite potential pushback. Travis and others humorously challenged Evan to provoke a reaction, while Norm suggested using e-clubs for part-time members in local community projects, which Evan supported as a worthy exploration. Both Evan and Norm highlighted the need for better promotion of Rotary's volunteer opportunities to engage a broader audience.

Rotary's Need for Modernisation
The group discussed challenges facing Rotary, including resistance to change and difficulty attracting younger members. Evan and others highlighted the need for a "drastic rethink" on how the organization operates, suggesting that current approaches may not effectively engage younger people or appeal to those seeking meaningful community impact. They emphasized the importance of moving beyond traditional methods and addressing the issue of member commitment, while also acknowledging the need to better communicate Rotary's value proposition in a competitive landscape.

Rotary's Regionalisation Challenges
Evan expressed concerns about the effectiveness of regionalisation in Rotary, noting that it has been challenging to implement and has led to apathy among members. He compared Rotary's approach to Lions Clubs, which has a centralised structure with a CEO and board of directors, and suggested that Rotary could benefit from a similar model.

Evan discussed the challenges of club isolation and lack of communication due to regionalisation, highlighting the need for a clear plan and strong leadership to address these issues. Rob shared insights from her experience with independent clubs, noting their success in community engagement despite not strictly following Rotary rules. Evan emphasised the importance of clubs feeling empowered to run their own affairs while maintaining the Rotary brand and principles. The discussion touched on the varying experiences of clubs in different regions, with some thriving independently and others struggling with membership and isolation.

Rotary Club Effectiveness and Innovation
Evan discussed the challenges and potential oversaturation of Rotary clubs in certain areas, highlighting the need for differentiation and consolidation to improve effectiveness and community impact. He shared insights from his experience with clubs in Maitland and Wagga Wagga, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and addressing internal cultural barriers. Evan also mentioned a creative Rotary initiative involving a giant bread and sausages event that gained significant social media attention, emphasizing the value of innovative marketing.
